Oprah Winfrey Gives Straightforward Response to Why She Won’t Be the Godmother of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Daughter Lilibet

After sitting down with Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex for a primetime special in March 2021, Oprah Winfrey made headlines. Some wondered if she was being too gentle with the couple by not asking tough questions or challenging any of their claims, while others wondered why Oprah didn’t contact the palace for a response to the allegations made by the Sussexes before the interview aired.

Following the birth of Meghan and Harry’s daughter, Lilibet Diana, on June 4, Lady O began sharing headlines with the couple once more, as everyone wanted to know if she would be the godmother to their new baby. Oprah, on the other hand, confirmed that she will not, citing a simple reason for her decision.

Oprah Winfrey could be one of Lilibet’s godparents, according to Meghan and Harry’s biographer.

Soon after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the birth of their second child, royal fans began speculating about who should be the godmother, and a few A-list celebrities were mentioned. Oprah’s name was also mentioned by the prince and Omid Scobie, the Suits star’s biographer, who has been dubbed the Sussexes’ unofficial spokesperson.

“You can understand why they might want to keep that to themselves if one of those godparents is Oprah–and I’m not saying she is–because even Oprah sitting down to interview them was controversial enough in itself,” the royal biographer told The Sun.

Oprah explains why she cannot be Lili’s godmother.

Following Scobie’s remark and the subsequent speculation, Oprah decided to clear the air by revealing that she is not the godmother because, well, she “doesn’t need to be.”

“I’m not interested in being a godmother. I mean, by default, I’m a godmother. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the media mogul stated, “I’m a neighbour, I’m a friend.”

“I think you probably need someone younger to be the godmother,” the legendary talk show host said, explaining why she wasn’t the best choice because of her age.

George Clooney, a fellow celebrity, previously stated that he is not Archie’s godfather.

Oprah isn’t the first person who royal fans assumed would be chosen as a godparent for Meghan and Harry’s child. Many assumed George Clooney had been asked to be Archie’s godfather after the birth of their son, but the actor quickly debunked those claims.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the actor said he was too preoccupied with his own projects to be anyone’s godfather. “That’s not a good idea. I’m not supposed to be the godfather. Clooney joked, “I’m a father of twins; I can barely do that,” before adding, “I’m not going to be the godfather.” I swear to you, [I] should not be anyone’s godfather.”

Serena Williams and Katherine McPhee have also been mentioned as possible godparents for Lili. We’ll probably never know if that’s true because Meghan and Harry, like Archie’s godparents, will most likely keep those details private.
